How to resume a Codex task after a usage-limit reset

The safest way to resume an interrupted Codex task is to return to the same task, verify the same project and host, review the current state, and then continue from the interruption point.

1. Keep the exact task

If the original conversation or task is still available, use it. Starting a new task can lose assumptions, previous decisions and the model’s understanding of what has already been attempted.

2. Wait until usage is actually available

Do not repeatedly retry before the reset. Treat the interruption as a wait state and resume only after the limit has cleared.

3. Verify the same environment

Confirm that you are back in the intended project and the correct Codex host. If you were working in ChatGPT Desktop, do not silently switch to another host unless you deliberately want a new workflow.

4. Check the project before continuing

Review the working tree, recent file changes, test status and any external changes made while the task was paused. The project state may have changed even if the original conversation has not.

5. Continue from the interruption point

Use the existing task context and continue the remaining work. A concise reminder can help if needed: what remains, what should be verified, and what must not be done automatically.

Can this be automated?

That is the workflow Continua is designed around. On supported macOS and Codex versions, Continua aims to keep the interrupted task and reset together, wait for usage to return, verify the expected environment, and continue the same task automatically. Continua does not bypass the limit and should wait rather than switch context when the expected host is unavailable.

Want this part handled automatically?

Codex usage limits interrupt the AI coding task. Remembering to return is another interruption. Continua for Mac is designed to preserve the same task, wait for actual usage availability, then auto-resume in its original supported environment.

Short answer

Resume the same Codex task, not a replacement. Verify the project and host first, then continue only after usage has genuinely returned.
